Did you know that one horsepower actually equals 550 foot-pounds per second, which is the power needed to lift 550 pounds one foot off the ground in one second, or one pound 550 feet up in one second?

Horsepower is the unit of measure for an engine’s power, and is a common car term that many people do not know the actual meaning of. Come to think of it, how many people really know how a car engine works?

You Can’t Judge A Book By Its Cover...or a Car

The make, model, and year of the car influence the type of engine it has. Seeing as there are so many types, we are just going to focus on general engine characteristics.

The number of cylinders an engine has (usually 4, 6, or 8), in addition to the engine shape, tends to be the main identifier.  For example, a V8 engine has 8 cylinders, with the engine (including the cylinders) being in the shape of a “V”. More cylinders tend to mean a more powerful engine, but the size of the cylinder matters also.

On Board Computer

Yes, your car is partly controlled by computer. In the past, everything in your car was mechanical. This is important because electricity plays a key role in the running of your car. Hence, the importance of the car battery (rechargeable) which powers the electrical systems. But now back to cylinders...


Each cylinder has a piston inside. Gasoline is measured and, well, injected under pressure into the cylinder (fuel injection). An electrical spark from the spark plug burns the liquid gasoline, and the resulting gas makes the piston move in an up/down motion. The pistons firing in sequence rotate the crankshaft until it completes a full rotation. This powers the transmission, which powers the drive shaft, which makes the wheels turn.
